Geology of Kerala (3rd Edition - Revised)
Abstract
Kerala is one of the most picturesque States of the Indian Union. Its geology is no less interesting. This revised book gives an updated account of the Geology, Geomorphology and Mineral Resources with an added chapter on Water resources of the State. Natural hazards that battered the State (tsunami of 2004, tremors, Ockhi cyclone of 2017, historic floods of 2018 and the attendant landslides) have been chronicled with insights for the need for focused studies to address the mitigation/management strategies. Fragility of the Western Ghats and water resource depletion/ pollution aspects have been elaborated and the need for conserving the natural capital/resources of the State emphasized. Early recognizable symptoms of climate change (rise in average temperature and change in rainfall pattern in south Kerala) have been cited in the Climate section. Coastal erosion issues and cyclogenesis prospects in the Arabian Sea are also amplified with stress on the need for long term monitoring of the oceanographic and coastal features of the State.
Students of geology and environment, soil scientists, civil and irrigation engineers and policy planners will find a lot of information in this book. The book forms part of the text book series brought out by the Geological Society of India, and is the third revised edition, since its first publication in 1997.
