Abstract
Purpose : This study systematically examined the principal attributes of virtual influencers and developed a hierarchical model outlining the relationships among these key attributes.
Methodology : A PRISMA framework was used to provide an applied level of rigor regarding the identification and screening of studies for this systematic review based on the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Total interpretive structural modeling (TISM), informed by a focus group of seven academic experts and three experienced followers was used to examine how the attributes of virtual influencers interacted with and mutually influenced one another, thereby enhancing the understanding of virtual influencers when considering their overall effectiveness.
Findings : The findings revealed that expertise functions as the most foundational attribute, exerting a predominantly indirect influence that cascades through similarity, authenticity, emotional expression, and anthropomorphism. Source realness, which has no antecedents, acts as a separate driver at an intermediate level, influencing anthropomorphism, uniqueness, trustworthiness, attractiveness, and autonomy. Together they shape autonomy, trustworthiness, and attractiveness as the framework’s key outcome attributes, with autonomy and trustworthiness, as well as similarity and authenticity, emerging as mutually reinforcing pairs.
Practical Implications : The contribution of this study was both theoretical and practical through the development of the relationships described in the model, as it offered marketers and researchers a way to strategically conceive and employ virtual influencers in their digital marketing campaigns.
Originality : This study contributed to the literature by being among the first to apply TISM to virtual influencer marketing, offering a novel hierarchical and structural perspective on attribute interrelationships that extends beyond prior source-credibility-based approaches.
